Object: Some wormy apples

We are going to talk about something most of us know very little about, and I hope something that none of us ever experience. We are going to talk about hunger. Has anyone here ever been sick because they had nothing to eat? (Let them answer.) I don’t think so, but there are boys and girls all over the world who do not have anything to eat. Can you imagine yourself being so hungry that you would eat tree leaves, sticks, and grass? Some children get so hungry they even eat dirt and sand. That sounds awful, but it is true. I want to talk to you about what we can do to help people like this so they will not be hungry.

Today I want to show you something I am sure makes God very unhappy. (Show them the wormy apple.) Do you know what I have in my hand? (Let them answer.) That’s right, it is an apple; but it is not the kind of apple that most of you would eat of purpose. This apple is filled with worms. I have seen trees that are filled with apples, but the apples are no good because they are filled with worms. I said God was unhappy about his apple and I am sure he is. This apple would have been all right if the tree had been taken care of at the right time. No one sprayed the tree, so the worms came and filled the apples. Now the apples are no good.

God expects us to take care of apple trees. We should take care of them, watch them grow, then pick them so there will be bushels and bushels of apples. We should do the same thing with every kind of food that grows. It we plant potatoes, we should also make sure we dig them up at the right time so they can be made ready for the market. Christians should take care of the berries, onions, corn, and tomatoes. We are responsible for taking care of all the food God makes the sun shine on and the rain to fall on. When God makes something live for our food, then we should take very good care of it and see that it becomes something good for someone to eat.

Wormy apples and dried-up berries are no good to anyone. They will not help a child grow but instread they make him sicker. If you do not take care of your clothes, they wear out sooner. If you do not shine your shoes, they fall apart quicker. If you don’t take care of the things that grow for food, then someone must be hungry. The next time you see an apple, I want you to check and see if it is wormy. If it is, then think of how unhappy God is and how hungry a child like you must be. But if it is good and solid and ready to be eaten, then you share the same happiness God must feel.

Jesus once said that any tree that does not bear good fruit should be cut down with an axe and burned in the fire. Another tree can grow where the bad tree was living. A bad tree used just as much water and sunshine as a good tree. We need to take care of our trees, keep them healthy and strong so they can grow good fruit to feed the people in the world who are hungry. Will you help take care of our trees and plants? Oh, good. God will be happy.
