Object: A banana

Good morning, boys and girls. I brought my lucky banana with me this morning. Do you have a lucky banana? You don't? There are some places in the world where people make wishes on a banana. You have heard of a lucky four-leaf clover or a lucky horse-shoe, haven't you? How about making a wish on the first star or on a wish-bone in a turkey or before you blow out your birthday candles? What's wrong with wishing on a banana then?

The way this superstition goes is this. First you peel the banana. Then you make a wish. Then you slice off the bottom of the banana where it attaches to the tree. If you find a spot in the shape of a "Y" for "yes", then your wish will come true. Let's try it. Make a wish. (Slice the banana).

We can enjoy making wishes like that, but we know it is just a game. Things don't happen just because we wish for them.

Of course we might do something else. We might pray about something that is very important to us. We can talk about it to God. That's much better than wishing. Of course we don't always get what we pray for, either. That's all right. We know God loves us. We know that the things He does give us are for our best good.

So, let's leave bananas for eating. When there are things we need or hope for, let's turn them over to God.
