Object: Sugar and sugar substitute; lemon and a lemon substitute.

Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever watched a movie about some exciting place and wished that you could visit there some day? A movie is a good thing, but it could never be as good as being there yourself. Movies are substitutes for adventure and they do a good job, but the adventure itself is the thing that everyone likes the best.

Here is another substitute. [Hold up the sugar substitute.] If you are trying to diet and you are not allowed to eat sugar, then you can put some of this substitute on your grapefruit, or in your coffee, or whatever you usually use sugar on, and you will not gain an ounce. I have another substitute, only this one is for lemons. If you do not like to squeeze lemons until your hands are sore, you can buy a substitute lemon juice that tastes a lot like lemon juice but is made of something else. These are substitutes for the real thing, just as a movie is a substitute for an adventure.

The reason that I have told you this is that there was a man by the name of John the Baptizer who did a lot of baptizing. He knew what he was doing, and it was a good thing. He kept talking about how he was preparing the world for Christ who was coming. He told them that what he did was just a substitute for the real thing that was going to happen when the Christ came. He said that his baptism was only a baptism of water, but when the Christ brought his baptism, it would be a baptism of the Spirit of God. In other words, John’s baptism was a substitute baptism until the real baptism of Jesus could take place.

It takes a lot of courage to be able to tell people that what you are doing is not the best that can be done, but John did. He baptized people who said that they wanted to start over. John said that anyone who wanted to start over and follow the teachings of God should be baptized. That was all that he could do. When Jesus baptized with the Spirit it meant not only did the people want to start over, but that God was forgiving them and starting over with them. Now God was involved in the baptism. It was more than just wanting to start over as with John’s substitute, but with Jesus it was both God and man starting over. John had a substitute and it was the best one that people had until Jesus came. But when they had a chance for the real thing, John told the people to be baptized in the real way with Jesus.
