Object: Bring a dust cloth and a can of furniture polish to use as an illustration. Option: Buy a package of dusting clothes so you can give each of the children a cloth.

Christmas is coming soon: Jesus' birthday. I always like to get the house cleaned and decorated to prepare for Christmas. We usually have company and a party. That is what this is for. Show the dust cloth and the furniture polish. What do you do to get ready for Christmas? (let children respond.) There is a story in the Bible about John the Baptist. Does anyone know who he is? John was Jesus' cousin just 6 months older than he. He also was a very special baby. He was born to a Jewish priest Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth. They were very old and had no children until God sent John to them. John had a special purpose in life. His job was to announce to the people that Jesus was coming. He told them to turn from their sin and get ready for the Lord's coming. Wouldn't that be an exciting job? John was out in the wilderness when God's direction came to him. He was ready. He went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching to the people to turn to God and to be prepared for someone greater than he to come. He had prepared himself for his great job. How can we prepare ourselves for Christmas? (Let children respond but lead them to answers like: read the Bible and live like God wants us to live.) Pass out the dust clothes if you have them and say: When you are helping to get your house ready for Christmas remember to get yourself ready also.

Prayer: Thank you for this Christmas season. Help each of us to prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus into our lives. Amen
