Object: A child's hammer and a regular hammer.

Good morning, boys and girls! How many of you, especially the boys, received some tools for Christmas? Did anyone here receive a hammer like this one? (Hold up child's hammer.) This is a really neat toy, because you can help your father when he works in his shop. When he nails, you can nail, and I am sure that he enjoys how you work with him. Of course, when you grow up, you will want to have a big hammer like your father uses. His hammer looks something like this one. (Hold up big hammer.) It also is good for many things, but it is especially good for driving nails into wood.

There was a man called John the Baptist who baptized people before anyone knew Jesus. He baptized because God told him to. When John baptized a man or woman, it helped to change their lives. It was a good thing to be baptized by John, but John knew that he was like your little hammer. John knew and told people that someday they would need another kind of baptism, and that baptism would only come from Jesus. Jesus is like the big hammer that your father uses in his shop. When John baptized, he told people that he used only water, but when Jesus came, he brought with him special power called the Spirit of God. The baptism of Jesus is the real baptism, just like your father's hammer is the real hammer. God used John the Baptist in the right way. John prepared people, taught people to get ready for Jesus. Your hammer teaches you how to use tools, and to learn what tools can really do. When you have your own shop, you will want to have a real hammer.

John knew that God wanted him to prepare the people for Jesus. God wanted everyone to know how much they needed Jesus and the baptism that Jesus brought with him. Your toy hammer will work: you can make nails go into a piece of wood and it is fun to learn how our fathers really work. But someday, you will want the real hammer, just like God wanted all of us to one day know the real baptism that Jesus brought. The next time you use your toy hammer, maybe it will help you to think about John's baptism and the difference between it and the big baptism with the spirit that was given to us by Jesus. Amen.
