Object: a stack of mail (some bills, some cards, mostly junk mail)

Good morning, boys and girls. Does your mommy and daddy get a lot of mail every day? When they look in the mail box, I bet there's a stack of mail for them to go through. In that stack will be a few bills, which they have to pay. There might be a letter or a card from a friend. That's going to be really special. And then there's the junk mail. Junk mail is just letters and notices that don't mean anything, that aren't special at all. Nobody likes getting junk mail. In fact, do you know what we do with junk mail? We throw it away. Junk mail isn't important at all, so there's no reason to read it or pay attention to it.

Our Bible story today is about a very important message, the most important message in the world. A man named John the Baptist is going around telling everyone that the Messiah, the Son of God, is coming soon. Wow! Can you think of a more important message than that? I can't! How exciting! The Son of God is coming to earth. We'll be able to see Him, to touch Him, to hear Him talk! What incredible news! But you know what was so sad? Some people didn't realize that this was an important message. They treated John's message just like junk mail they ignored it and threw it away. So some people didn't care that Jesus had come. They didn't care that He was God's own Son. Those people missed the most important message in the world. We celebrate Christmas because we believe that Jesus' coming is the most important thing that could happen. Let's remember this Christmas to spread this very important message to others, too, so they can learn about Jesus.
